We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that began as a project of the Lambda
Community Center (now called the Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center) in 1989 as a response
to the lack of local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender theatre.
Our mission is to educate and entertain, through the medium of live theatre, with subject
matter relevant to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population. Fulfilling our
mission, we shall strive to provide a safe, non-discriminatory environment for artists of
all sexual orientations to join together in celebration of the LGBT community.
In late 2004, we moved to our first permanent home - a small, 41-seat theatre on 17th Street,
just off Broadway in Sacramento. This move marked the transition of the Lambda Players from
a traveling theatre troupe to a full-fledged community theatre with a full-time home. For
three years, we dealt with a cramped stage, upstairs neighbors, one restroom for our patrons
and on-street parking in our "intimate" theatre space, but we were happy to finally have a
place of our own!
In September 2007, we moved into the Studio Theatre, built and owned by Jackie Schultz – an
89-seat theatre with a much larger stage, two dressing rooms, separate bathrooms (three stalls
in the women’s room!), a spacious lobby and plenty of private parking. The Studio Theatre is
perhaps best known for its eight year run of Six Women with Brain Death, which was directed by
Jackie. We are thrilled that Jackie has welcomed us into her theatre home and look forward to
further developing our repertoire of community offerings to include special musical events,
comedy, dance…who knows?
